How to check alternator freewheel clutch at idle and function?

overrunning alternator pulley

The life of the overrunning alternator clutch pulley is 100,000 to 150,000 km, just like the alternator belt. It is a wearing part. Pay special attention to whether it is necessary to replace the overrunning alternator pulley after 100,000 km. Please note that the frequency of replacing the alternator belt is variable as well as the replacement of the alternator clutch pulley, mainly depends on the condition of the kit. If the belt and tensioner are in good condition, it is therefore necessary to be alert to possible abnormal symptoms of the operating state of the alternator pulley.

How to check its condition? Advice from GXOAP

  1. Observe the condition of the alternator pulley during engine operation:
    • When the alternator pulley fails, it sounds like a loud/random clicking noise at idle.
    • If the clutch pulley fails, a squeaking sound can often be heard when the engine is turned off. As with most mechanical equipment, abnormal noise is a precursor to failure.
    • Worn bearings: You will also hear noises, such as grinding. If the freewheel alternator pulley does not rotate smoothly, the bearings may be worn, so, it needs to be replaced.
  2. Worn belt: If you hear alternator pulley noise or squeaking, it may mean that the drive belt is worn and should be replaced.
  3. Loose belt: We hear squeaking because the belt may slip on the over-running alternator pulley. It has to be fixed soon.
  4. Stuck: The bearings on the car alternator pulley may be causing it to not move and not rotate. To check this, you can simply grab the belt and try to turn it by hand with the vehicle turned off. If it is stuck, the overrunning alternator pulley must be replaced.
  5. The belt and alternator pulley appear to wobble, shake or have difficulty moving. In this case, it must be replaced.
  6. Broken pulley: It may be that the support is deformed or loose. You must replace it with a new one because the pulley will wobble and the belt may eventually fall off.
